Sounds like a war-zone outside

The Netherlands, the last day of the year: a never-ending roar of fireworks. It starts early in the morning on the 31st and does not stop till well into the new year.

I hate it, with a passion.
So do the dogs.
And the cats.
Bah.

Piet is dood

De buurman van mijn ouders. Niemand is echt verbaasd en toch wel. Piet had MS, zo lang als ik hem ken (bijna 20 jaar) in een rolstoel, behoorlijk gehandicapt maar toch voor 100% in het leven. Hij was heel beperkt, en toch genoot hij van alles om hem heen. Een vriendelijk man, een levendige geest. Zo vaak door het oog van de naald gekropen dat we dachten, hij wordt wel oud, Piet overleeft het wel.

Afgelopen week was hij voor een klein luchtwegen aandoening naar het ziekenhuis en... is geheel onverwacht overleden. Het is verbazend dat hij het zo lang heeft kunnen overleven, en toch wel schokkend dat hij overleden is.

Dag Piet! Nooit zal ik je zien door het raam en wuiven, goeiedag! En jij, langzaam een hand omhoog, glimlach, groet terug.

Amazon, Paypal, Visa

I sent email messages to the above three, asking what was going on with regards to Wikileaks. I told Amazon I was closing my account with them (and I was one of their first customers, way back when).

No answer. Dead silence on all fronts. I keep getting promotional emails as if nothing's changed.
But, things have changed. I am listing alternatives for Amazon, Paypal and Visa. I've already told Amazon to close my account and remove all my information from their servers and if they don't accede to this, I'll take legal steps. The other two, I'll be closing down soon as well.

There are other credit cards out there that won't try to stifle me. There are other places where I can order books, music, movies. There are other online payment options.

I am the only one who decides whom or what cause I give my money to.

• TECH: DDoS attack hits WikiLeaks as first set of US diplomatic cables is published.

Wednesday 1 December

• TECH: Tableau Software, which offers free software for data visualisation, removes the public views of graphics built using information about the diplomatic cables. It is the first company to distance itself from Wikileaks, and admits that the reason was pressure from Senator Joe Lieberman, an independent senator with ties to the Democratic party.

• POLITICS: Lieberman, chairman of the Senate's committee on homeland security, calls for Wikileaks to be taken offline. "I call on any other company or organization that is hosting Wikileaks to immediately terminate its relationship with them. Wikileaks' illegal, outrageous, and reckless acts have compromised our national security and put lives at risk around the world. No responsible company - whether American or foreign - should assist Wikileaks in its efforts to disseminate these stolen materials."

• TECH Amazon removes Wikileaks's content from its EC2 cloud service, but later insists it did so because the content could cause harm to people and did not belong to Wikileaks – and that it was not due to political pressure or the hacker attacks against the site.

Friday 3 December

• TECH: Wikileaks.org ceases to work for web users after everyDNS.com, which had provided a free routing service translating the human-readable address into a machine-readable form, ends support.

Wikileaks shifts to a backup domain registered in Switzerland but actually hosted in Sweden, at Wikileaks.ch, though the cables are hosted in part by OVH, an internet provider in the north of France.

EveryDNS claims that the DDOS attacks against Wikileaks were disrupting its service provided to thousands of other customers. The company says it is "following established policies so as not to put any one EveryDNS.net user's interests ahead of any others. Lastly, regardless of what people say about the actions of EveryDNS.net, we know this much is true - we believe in our New Hampshire state motto, Live Free or Die."

• POLITICS: French industry minister Eric Besson writes to internet companies warning them there will be "consequences" for any companies or organisations helping to keep WikiLeaks online in the country.

• MONEY: PayPal, owned by US auction site eBay, permanently restricts account used by WikiLeaks due to a "violation of the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy". A spokesman said the account was suspended because "[it] cannot be used for any activities that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity."

• MONEY: Credit card company Mastercard withdraws ability to make donations to Wikileaks. "MasterCard is taking action to ensure that WikiLeaks can no longer accept MasterCard-branded products," the credit card outfit says.

• TECH: Wikileaks' servers in Sweden attacked by distributed denial of service attack.

• MONEY: Postfinance, the Swiss postal system, strips WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange of a key fundraising tool, accusing him of lying and immediately shutting down one of his bank accounts. The bank says that Assange had "provided false information regarding his place of residence during the account opening process."
Assange had told Postfinance he lived in Geneva but could offer no proof that he was a Swiss resident, a requirement of opening such an account. Postfinance spokesman Alex Josty told The Associated Press the account was closed Monday afternoon and there would be "no criminal consequences" for misleading authorities. "That's his money, he will get his money back," Josty said. "We just close the account and that's it."

• MONEY: Credit card company Visa withdraws ability to make donations or payments to Wikileaks. "Visa Europe has taken action to suspend Visa payment acceptance on WikiLeaks' website pending further investigation into the nature of its business and whether it contravenes Visa operating rules," said a spokesman.

What WikiLeaks is really exposing is the extent to which the western democratic system has been hollowed out. In the last decade its political elites have been shown to be incompetent (Ireland, the US and UK in not regulating banks); corrupt (all governments in relation to the arms trade); or recklessly militaristic (the US and UK in Iraq). And yet nowhere have they been called to account in any effective way. Instead they have obfuscated, lied or blustered their way through. And when, finally, the veil of secrecy is lifted, their reflex reaction is to kill the messenger.

Privatisering = gebrekkig onderhoud?

Vroegah.... hadden we ook blaadjes op het spoor. We hadden ook sneeuw en ijs en vriesweer.

Vroeger reed ik vaak met de trein en ik herinner me niet de drama van de afgelopen jaren. Stations gesloten (Utrecht, laatst), treinen laat, vertraagd, kapot (en sinds kort, zonder wc!!), steeds vaker technische mankementen.

Privatisering betekent een oog voor winst boven kwaliteit. Je gaat het minimum aan noodzakelijke onderhoud plegen om de kosten te drukken. Welk niveau van ellende zal de klant nog pikken, wordt de centrale vraag van een bedrijf in de marktplaats.

En hier zitten we nu. Hoe langer het doorgaat, hoe slechter de staat van materieel. Hoe duurder het wordt om het weer goed te maken.

Kunnen we niet zeggen dat het grote markt experiment met Openbaar Vervoer is mislukt (alsof we echt nodig hadden om zelf dezelfde experiment van Engeland over te doen, de uitslag daar was toch zo klaar als een klontje!), kunnen we niet gewoon OV en alle onderdelen hiervan weer terugplaatsen in het Algemeen Goed. Nationaliseren, dus.

I've been increasingly using PayPal over the past years for my internet transactions.
I can use IDeal, but I don't like it much. Or pay directly via credit card... and I probably will.

I use PayPal to pay small vendors who have no other alternative. I am going to let them know to change their options or lose me as a customer. I also use PayPal to do simple money transfers to people. I will simply have to find another way.

It will take a bit more work than Amazon to untangle myself but do it, I shall.
(It was an enlightening moment, to realise how many of my eggs are in one basket)

Amazon kicked off Wikileaks?

After suffering aggressive cyber attacks last weekend, Assange removed his "cablegate" site from servers in Sweden and purchased a new home for it on Amazon's web hosting service. On Tuesday, Amazon talked on the phone with the office of Sen. Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Senate's committee on homeland security.

Shortly thereafter, Amazon booted WikiLeaks. The senator responded with a statement: "I wish that Amazon had taken this action earlier based on WikiLeaks' previous publication of classified material. The company's decision to cut off WikiLeaks now is the right decision and should set the standard for other companies WikiLeaks is using to distribute its illegally seized material."

Update 2010 12-04: I sent a mail to Amazon (UK and USA) requesting to close my account with them. I've done a lot of business at these sites over the years but they are not the only book/CD/DVD sellers out there. Like many others, I will purchase what I want elsewhere in future.

Climate change

The Club of Rome report The Limits to Growth was published in 1972. I didn't read it back then, I was pretty much oblivious of what was happening and what would happen in future. I was still in school in South Africa, in standard 7. It was not mentioned in the papers, not discussed in class.

I graduated high school in 1975, still oblivious of population growth, the finite nature of resources and climate change. I knew indiscriminate DDT use had probably obliterated my beloved chameleons but other than that, I was clueless. In those days in South Africa, any kind of conservationist stance was seen as wimpy, naive and immature, laughable, so environmentally minded people did not stand front and centre with their opinions.

I left South Africa for the Netherlands in 1985 - a very densely populated country. I became aware quite quickly of environmental issues such as acid rain, pollution of air water and ground. Still, this was low-key, not mainstream news. I became more aware of things environmental but still did not realise the gravity of the situation.

Then, I entered university and studied biology. It seemed like a massive wave of information hitting me from all sides at once and all of it negative. Acid rain, ground contamination, water drenched it agricultural effluent (poisons and nutrients) etc etc... and the Club of Rome report. I read it and walked about in shock for about a year or so, reading furiously and informing myself as fast as I could.

After the shock wore off I was at first very angry at myself for being so blind for so long. Then I became quite missionary about spreading the message and probably made a real pest of myself! One environmental scandal followed another without leaving people room to breathe. This relentless avalanche eventually resulted in the public at large turning off the panic switch. The breathless reactions became ...."meh", another environmental scandal.

Time went by and it became pretty clear that we humans were changing our environment on a global scale. I got my degree and carried on with my life, trying to keep my footprint small and my own people (community) informed. Alarmist, fear mongerer, drama queen etc was an often heard response. This did not make me give up, I just tried to find other, more effective methods of spreading information on environmental issues. Some listened, most just shrugged and went on. At some point I understood that talking about problems without offering solutions will end up with the same reaction time after time. And, there were very few solutions on an individual scale... the problem was global, the solution simply had to be global too.

The IPCC published their first report in 1990 to a deafening and indifferent silence. Two, three and four followed with the contents increasingly alarming and the tone increasingly alarmed. I discovered the Internet around that time and developed my voice in online forums etc. At first, I came across the same indifference except where I was preaching to the converted (which at first was exhilarating!): there I was, finally being heard.... until I realised that while it was definitely pleasant to have my ego stroked, it was also getting me absolutely nowhere. When you talk about a problem that's unsolvable unless a massive and painful (let's be honest about it) lifestyle change takes place sooner rather than later, people tend to switch off.

By the time Kyoto came along I understood the issues and was in full agreement with it. In fact, it just didn't go far enough for me! Years went by and by and by without ratification in the big countries, and everything that could possibly be perverted, was. I was becoming profoundly depressed, then I would rally and fight on the good fight again. Increasingly I felt as if I was simply a witness, an informed, powerless witness of a disaster happening in slow motion.

Over the years I tried fear, persuasion, pretty words and pictures, tons of proof, kumbaya and every other approach out there. Up till recently, people were stubbornly unconvinced about it even being possible that little old you or I could influence climate on a planetary scale. These days, the realisation is slowly dawning for some. Others remain firmly in denial and will probably hold that position till the day they die.

Today we have CO2 levels around 390 ppm while 350 ppm is considered the upper safe limit by leading climate scientists. We have a variety of other issues affecting global climate, like methane releases into the atmosphere, ocean acidification, steep phytoplankton decrease, etc. Kyoto dies in 2012 and there is nothing to replace it other than "voluntary" targets that are greenspun beyond belief. N.O.T.H.I.N.G. Copenhagen was a shocking failure and since then, a stunned inaction prevails. Some leading scientist like James Hansen are doing all they can in a world currently in the grip of a financial crisis of shocking magnitude that leaves no room for talk of CO2 reduction. The TV, night after night, broadcasts fluff and fun. Substantive reporting and seriously researched documentaries are absent from such public forums and consequently, climate change simply doesn't make it into the mainstream social discourse.

My mind has given up even as my heart still refuses to accept the reality: that we would act like blind bacteria growing profusely on a rich medium till we poison ourselves out of existence. A small corner of my mind is still in denial that climate change is happening at all and a huge part of my mind cannot conceive that we have the knowledge and know-how to get out of the hole we are digging for ourselves... but, collectively, won't.

The scientific debate is not between deniers and those who can prove that releasing massive amounts of warming gases will make the world warmer. Every major scientific academy in the world, and all the peer-reviewed literature, says global warming denialism is a pseudo-science, on a par with Intelligent Design, homeopathy, or the claim that HIV doesn’t cause AIDS. One email from one lousy scientist among tens of thousands doesn’t dent that. No: the debate is between the scientists who say the damage we are doing is a disaster, and the scientists who say it is catastrophe.

Now there is a radically different theory that is gaining adherents, ominously named the Medea hypothesis. The paleontologist Professor Peter Ward is an expert in the great extinctions that have happened in the earth’s past, and he believes there is a common thread between them. With the exception of the meteor strike that happened 65 million years ago, every extinction was caused by living creatures becoming incredibly successful – and then destroying their own habitats. So, for example, 2.3 billion years ago, plant life spread incredibly rapidly, and as it went it inhaled huge amounts of heat-trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This then caused a rapid plunge in temperature that froze the planet and triggered a mass extinction.


Ward believes nature isn’t a nurturing mother like Gaia. No: it is Medea, the figure from Greek mythology who murdered her own children. In this theory, life doesn’t preserve itself. It serially destroys itself. It is a looping doomsday machine. This theory adds a postscript to Darwin’s theory of the survival of the fittest. There is survival of the fittest, until the fittest trash their own habitat, and do not survive at all.


But the plants 2.3 billion years ago weren’t smart enough to figure out what they were doing. We are.

Fyra

De supersnelle trein van de NS...

Gisteren kwam ik aan op Schiphol na een heerlijke vakantie. Ik dacht, laat ik met de snelle trein naar Rotterdam, dan ben ik in een wip thuis.

Kaartje gekocht, stond ik op de perron te wachten toen de aankondiging kwam dat de Fyra niet zou rijden. Tja. Daar sta je dan met je koffers en vermoeide gejetlagde hoofd. Op de gewone, stampvolle trein gestapt en blijven staan tot we in Rotterdam aankwamen. Toen na wat gestuntel (bedankt vriendelijke jongeman die mij de trap af hielp met mijn tassen!) naar de klantenservice. Die wisten mij te vertellen dat zij hier niets aan konden doen, ik moest omhoog. Twee loodzware tassen... nee hoor ik ging echt niet weer een berg trappen omhoog!

Uiteindelijk moest ik toch wel trappen omhoog (bedankt nog een vriendelijke jongeman die mij de trap omhoog hielp met mijn tassen!) en met de trein naar Rotterdam Alexandrium (bedankt derde vriendelijke jongeman die mij de trap af hielp met mijn tassen!) ... waar men mij wist te vertellen dat zij mij ook niet kunnen helpen. Zij waren namelijk niet van de NS, zij verkopen alleen de kaartjes.

Uiteindelijk thuis gekomen heb ik een briefje met uitleg opgesteld, de Fyra kaartje erbij, postzegel erop en in de brievenbus. Zal mij benieuwen of ik ooit iets hoor hierover.

De volgende keer regel ik wel een taxi of zoiets.




UPDATE: Ik kreeg vandaag een keurige brief van Fyra met hun excuses. Het bedrag van mijn kaartje wordt overgemaakt. Dat vind ik dan weer netjes van Fyra.

Het jatten van publiek geld

Bij de meeste mensen gaan de gedachten dan gelijk naar uitkeringstrekkers die er levendig op los frauderen.

Ik vind echter dit soort "legaal stelen" vele malen erger.

Het kan gewoon, zonder een enkel negatief gevolg voor deze Johan van Praet. Dat waren mijn belastingcenten!!!

Ik wil het niet en ik denk dat het schandalig is dat we nu in feite worden geregeerd door Wilders. Want, zo is het wel. Hij maakt of breekt wat er gaat gebeuren.

Ik wil ook weten hoe het kan, dat geen enkele blik uitging naar een Linkse coalitie. Daar hoefde géén gedoogtruukjes gespeeld: het kon.

We hebben nu een gedrocht en de enige die dit kan of zal opblazen, is Wilders. Want, CDA heeft bewezen dat ze alles en dan ook alles zullen doen om de macht te houden, en de VVD vindt het wel prima zo.

Hoe is mijn land in zo'n korte tijd veranderd? Ik snap het niet... en nee ik geef de buitenlanders niet de schuld. Is dit de resultaat van de "IK" generatie, al die prinsen en prinsessen die (on)volwassen geloven in zelfbelang boven het collectief? Is dat het?

In de VS hebben ze deze route gekozen en wat je ziet, is dat het uiteindelijk leidt tot een tweesplitsing in een samenleving met arm en rijk en weinig in het midden. In de VS denkt de meerderheid nog dat ze in de rijke hoek horen, het is alleen een kwestie van tijd. Intussen heb je krakende armoe, overdadige rijkdom en een middelklas dat aan het oplossen is. Dit moeten we echt niet willen.

Bezuinigingen MOETEN??

Marcel van Dam slaat het spijker goed op z'n kop:

VVD en CDA zijn uit ideologische overwegingen al decennia bezig de verzorgingsstaat te strippen. Dat is niet nodig omdat we een crisis hebben, maar ze hebben een crisis nodig om daarmee door te kunnen gaan.

PvdA, GroenLinks en D66 durven daar niet voluit stelling tegen te nemen. Ze willen graag meeregeren en zijn bang voor een imago van ‘big spenders’. Dus brengen ze hun hervormingen ook maar onder bij het uitkleden van de verzorgingsstaat. Met als gevolg dat er een soort consensusdwang is ontstaan om hoe dan ook fors te bezuinigen.

Omdat politici bijna Kamerbreed al tientallen jaren ons volk bedreigen met de ondergang als we de verzorgingsstaat niet ingrijpend herzien, zijn veel mensen gaan geloven dat dit moet. Maar net als de spoedige komst van het einde der tijden is dat een opinie, geen feit.

ExxonMobil spent ~ $25 million since 1998 to fund climate denier groups

They promised they would stop doing this in 2007. They haven't stopped at all, though: last year they gave 1.5 million dollars to climate denier groups - funding much of the still ongoing Climategate frenzy (yes all scientists and scientific organisations have since been cleared by a number of independent investigations) ...which erupted so conveniently right before the climate talks in Copenhagen that the process was utterly derailed and ended in failure.

No wonder the public is confused about climate change, there has been a sustained, well funded campaign of deliberate disinformation poured over their heads. And on the other side, underfunded, under siege climate scientists (who by definition are not very good at PR and campaigning). It's an uneven fight, it's an unfair fight. And the victims are us, the planet and all that lives on it. All for higher profits for a select few.

I get so mad that this is allowed at all - this has nothing to do with free speech. If you yell fire in a packed movie house and people die as they get trampled in the rush, that's going to get you before a judge. Why is this different? Because the time scale is larger and most of the dead are in countries far away, where they are poor and without influence?

I think ExxonMobil's behaviour is criminal. If a corporation is a person in the eyes of the law, perhaps it's time they were treated as one.

Yes I know, I said i was done with Climategate but I just want to link to this article: Climategate: the missing context because yes, I would like to see a journalist do the research, and dammit, publish the expose.

I want to know who was behind this, and why.

SWELTER!!!

Dear heavens, it is HOT. and HUMID.
Even the thunderstorms don't cool things noticeably.

I'm not a tropical heat kind of person, I do much better in cooler climes.
I love summer up to 30C, then things go downhill fast.

My poor garden is reeling. Nothing is growing to production yet, except for the one broccoli plant (harvested, yum) and a few heads of salad. My courgettes refused to grow in the cold, then peeped up when it got warm and are now stunned by the heat, standing still. The gem squash, same thing. The fig tree, thank heaven for fig trees, is producing abundantly.

Goodbye, sweet girl.

The growing number of older people would require the average retirement age to rise to 67 in 2040 and 70 by 2060 to maintain the current pension system, it says.

Lower birth rates and longer life expectancy mean that retiring earlier will not be sustainable.

Germany will raise the retirement age to 67 in 2029. Spain is considering a similar hike and Britain is discussing increasing it to 68.

But other countries are moving far more slowly. French President Nicolas Sarkozy is facing fierce opposition to his plans for people to retire at 62, instead of 60.

CO2 emissions remain steady

This graph from the report "No growth in total global CO2 emissions in 2009", published yesterday by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL), leaves me profoundly depressed.

It shows that in the industrialised countries, CO2 emissions went down thanks to the economic crisis. At the same time, it increased quite a bit in the developing economies. Result of this sum is a steady state over 2009 - this is so not the decline we had hoped for!

Every time I work myself up towards a little optimism, something like this comes and kicks my feet from under me.

We are not going to beat this thing, are we.

Big Brother in the EU

In Europe, we have 2006/24/EG (pdf) which regulates that all providers have to save, for one year, all data to do with with whom you call on your phone, where your mobile phone is and when you log in on the internet. Now, the EU -undemocratic body that it is- has adopted a resolution to add to this list: the search terms you use in Google.

This is so unbelievably invasive! I'm not one of the "I have nothing to hide so they can look all they like" crowd. No, I don't think I have anything terrible to hide but this is MY life and MY privacy and nobody should have the right to invade my head like that. I think this is a shocking development. Governments are not allowed to follow you and listen over your shoulder as you talk to people you meet, recording every word, noting down names etc. and yet this is exactly what is happening here!!!

If you don't like the idea of this happening, there are two things you can do.

1. Google httpS ://www.google.com instead of http://www.google.com, to encrypt your searches (I'm not sure this will help, according to some people the search engines themselves will be required to save the search terms. In that case, encryption won't help).

2. Use the Firefox browser, and install this plugin, to fill Google up with random search terms.

The CO2 levels are heading up, up and up. 350 ppm is considered the upper safe limit we could comfortably live with on this planet... but we passed that point long ago and don't look to be hitting a u-turn anytime soon.

I think our direction's pretty clear now. Still, there are enough fanatics irl and online wanting to have their cake and eat it too. I think we need to start ignoring them, stop giving them a platform to spout their nonsense. Their misinformation has been debunked time and again and yet again, enough of that! Our energy needs to go in a different direction.

What are we going to do?!?! Part of me wants to throw my hands up and say fuck that, I give up. Another part of me is looking at my (adult) son, at the children of my family and friends, and I simply can't give up. We just cannot leave them the world in this state.

It's too late to stop the change but maybe it will be possible to put the brakes on and make it survivable, at least. Maybe we can still make plans for coping with the changes.

We need to accept that really serious changes are coming and within our lifetime. We need to start thinking, talking, acting adaptation. And we need to act on this on a global scale. And we truly need to halt the upward trend of carbon emissions for this to have a snowball's chance in hell.

We need to understand this issue down to the bones, and we need to develop a sense of urgency.
Because it is urgent.

Einde van een tijdperk

Jammer. Het kraken diende wel degelijk een functie. Ik zal altijd met warme gevoelens terugdenken aan de diverse kraakpanden en gemeenschappen van sociaal geëngageerde mensen die ik (vooral) in Groningen heb leren kennen, zo'n 20 jaar geleden.

De antikraakwet is een feit. Kraken is daarmee 'crimineel'. De wet, die vorig jaar op het nippertje door de Tweede Kamer werd aangenomen, is nu ook door de Eerste Kamer geaccepteerd.

Another strike against Europe - whaling

European Commission lawyers have said that the EU must vote by consensus in the IWC, and if consensus cannot be achieved, the 25 EU member states – who form a substantial voting block in the 88-member IWC – must abstain.

Most EU nations will be against the deal, but it is possible that Denmark, with links to indigenous whaling communities in the Faroes and Greenland, might vote in favour, in which case Britain and other opponents would not be able to cast their votes against it, and the chances of the deal going through would soar.

The issue is still being negotiated between European Commission lawyers and member states, including Britain.

Because of an EU regulation it will be possible for commercial whaling to return. In fact, it seems inevitable that commercial whaling will return. Thanks to a horrible deal cooked up by politicians who have very conflicted interests.

This is a terrible shame and really should not be allowed to happen. If countries are required by law to vote by consensus in this issue, it will be another huge nail in the coffin of the great Euro experiment.

I am beyond furious and outraged. This is unacceptable, it simply must not happen!


UPDATE: We got lucky. The situation remains unchanged, for now. Watch this space, though. This situation has by no means been resolved, just shelved for a little while.

Hier is een principieel verschil tussen mij en de SP. Ik deel hun standpunt helemaal niet. Ik ben van mening dat de auteursrecht helemaal op de schop moet, op wereldniveau. Beperkingen, repressie enz, dat gaat geheel de foute kant op.

Banning vicious dog breeds?

I have been thinking on this for quite some time, ever since the Dutch government has been talking about new regulations and behavioural tests... and the banning of certain 'notorious' breeds.

I don't think they should ban any breeds. But I do think that the legislation should change when it comes to liability. I think dog owners should be able to certify behaviour -there are fairly good behavioural tests for dogs these days, to test the level of agression. They are not foolproof, but certainly a good indicator. The best thing would be to offer all dog owners the opportunity to have their dogs voluntarily behaviour certified for free or for very small fee (with a chip as certification, hopefully not so easy to fake). This could be financed out of the huge amount of dog taxes we pay every year! Then, if your dog attacks someone or if there are valid complaints about agressive behaviour and there is no certification, YOU should be held financially liable. There should be criminal liability for the owner of an uncertified dog if there are injuries. As far as i'm concerned that could result in a whopping great fine up to prison sentence.

If your dog fails the test I think the best solution would be that owners would be required to have such dogs always leashed and muzzled in public. That's the only part I think could be a problem - I think the more rigid thinkers might say: fail the test, kill the dog. And that would not do. You would never get dog owners to co-operate with such a certification scheme if they thought their dogs would be put down on the basis of the outcome. Quite rightly so!

In my opinion this would work if the three key factors are present: a voluntary basis, serious consequences of non-certification, and no life-or-death decisions based on the outcome of the behavioural test.

"Die zitten nog steeds op de toer van: geld uitgeven dat we niet hebben. Ze weigeren verantwoording te nemen voor versterking van de euro en het Stabiliteitspact."

D66-ster Sophie in 't Veld legt eveneens de schuld bij de socialisten, die volgens haar niet willen beseffen dat hogere overheidsuitgaven nu niet meer kunnen. Ze vindt het bovendien niet netjes dat de socialisten op de valreep hun steun voor een compromis introkken.

Wie overigens al in een huurwoning zit en inmiddels meer verdient dan 33 duizend euro, hoeft zich geen directe zorgen te maken. Verhuizen hoeft niet. Maar als deze huurder een nieuwe woning wil betrekken, zijn woningen onder de 648 euro niet meer te krijgen. In de huurklasse van meer dan 648 euro huur per maand hebben corporaties relatief weinig woningen beschikbaar. Volgens de Vernieuwde Stad, een vereniging van 22 grote corporaties, zullen door de leenregels de komende vijf jaar 30 duizend huurwoningen minder bijgebouwd worden. Het gaat om 18 duizend woningen met een huur van 650 tot 750 euro per maand.

Alleen huurwoningen van boven de 750 euro per maand zijn dan voor de potentiële huurders beschikbaar. Maar voor wie maandelijks 1.800 tot 2.400 euro netto heeft te besteden, zou zo’n huurwoning een te grote hap uit het inkomen wegnemen.

Voor de modale inkomens resteert dan een koopwoning. Maar zonder eigen geld is er in de Randstad weinig verkrijgbaar. Wie jaarlijks 33- tot 43 duizend euro verdient kan onder de officiële NHG-regels maximaal 155 duizend tot 200 duizend euro lenen. Daarvoor zijn in veel regio’s weinig woningen beschikbaar.

Als je wilt weten hoe het nu echt zit met Griekenland

...dan zou je dit artkel eigenlijk moeten lezen.

Dit plaatje klopt mijns inziens heel goed. En als je het boek The Shock Doctrine van Naomi Klein ernaast leest, snap je wel wat hier aan de hand is. Let maar op, als met de reeds ingeslagen weg wordt doorgegaan, wordt sociaal Europa tegen een rap tempo afgebroken.

Dit is geen complotdenken, dit is gewoon een natuurlijke consequentie van een neoliberaal economisch denkwijze dat ingebakken zit in de hele Brusselse wet- en regelgeving. Het begint bij Griekenland maar denk toch niet dat wij hier buiten schot blijven.

Ze zitten in een gat waar ze gewoon niet uit zullen komen. En wij samen met hun... ik was een grote voorstander van de Euro toen het werd ingevoerd. Geen omrekenen meer van lire naar drachme naar gulden.... hemels!!! Maar ik had niet door wat de consequenties zouden zijn voor de verschillende landen. Hierin hebben onze regeringen gefaald want zij wisten het wel. Ze hebben hun eigen electoraat niet goed ingelicht, ze hebben allemaal gekozen voor een verrijking van banken en bedrijven boven het welzijn van hun bevolking. Ik ben geen econoom, ik ben een simpele burger - maar ik begin het nu wel te snappen. De voordelen van één munt wegen voor mij niet op tegen de verliezen die wij op sociaal vlak lijden, en die nog zullen komen. Het wordt een enorme verarming van ons samenleving.

Een paar citaten uit het artikel:

De Euro werd niet enkel ingevoerd om een Europese eenheidsmarkt mogelijk te maken, maar ook en vooral om de internationale (imperialistische) concurrentie aan te gaan met de VS en de Amerikaanse dollar. De bedoeling was om van de euro een mondiale munt te maken. Om dit mogelijk te maken, moest de euro een sterke en stabiele munt worden. Dat veronderstelt dat een heel stringent neoliberaal fiscaal en monetair beleid zou worden gevoerd, maar ook dat de landen uit de Europese periferie die zouden toetreden tot de euro dat zouden doen aan een relatief hoge wisselkoers. Dat was vooral een Duitse eis. Op die manier wilde men inflatie vermijden, want die zou de concurrentiepositie van de euro ten opzichte van de dollar immers hebben verzwakt. Doordat landen uit de Europese periferie aan hoge wisselkoersen in de Euro stapten, werd hun concurrentiepositie op de euromarkt uiteraard diepgaand aangetast.

De realisatie van de Europese eenheidsmarkt had als gevolg dat de concurrentie tussen de lidstaten enkel zou toenemen. Daarenboven heeft de invoering van de euro een bijkomend effect. De euro zorgde ervoor dat eurolanden hun competitiviteit enkel nog zouden kunnen versterken door de lonen te matigen en aan de arbeidsvoorwaarden (flexibiliteit, sociale zekerheid enzovoort) te morrelen, of door ‘de efficiëntie van de overheid’ te verbeteren (lees: te privatiseren, marktmechanismen in te voeren in de openbare sector enzovoort). Men kon niet meer competitiever worden via monetair of fiscaal beleid, want op die terreinen werd Europa bevoegd of legde Europa een keurslijf rond het nationale beleid.

De euro zou dan ook een enorme druk zetten op de klassenverhoudingen binnen de lidstaten. Het gevolg kennen we: in heel Europa werd een politiek van loonmatiging gevoerd ‘in naam van de concurrentie’. Het aandeel van de lonen in het nationaal inkomen daalde in de hele eurozone, maar in de ene lidstaat al meer dan in de andere. Een belangrijke vaststelling die hierbij gemaakt moet worden, zo stellen de onderzoekers van RMF, is dat Duitsland deze ratrace overtuigend heeft gewonnen. Onder meer met dank aan de sociaaldemocratische SPD, die met de beruchte Hartz plannen de lonen heel fel onder druk zette. Nergens in Europa werd met zoveel succes een loonmatigingspolitiek gevoerd.

Door die loonmatigingen en door zijn omvang werd de Duitse economie overtuigend competitiever dan die van veel andere eurolanden. Tussen 2000 en 2007 daalden de nominale arbeidskosten per eenheid product in Duitsland met 0,2% per jaar, terwijl ze stegen met 2% in Frankrijk, 2,3% in Groot-Brittannië, tussen 3,2 en 3,7% in Italië, Spanje, Ierland en Griekenland, vaak ook als gevolg van inflatie.

De Duitse export is groter dan de import, waardoor buitenlands geld Duitsland binnenstroomt, dat vervolgens terug naar de periferie vloeit via kapitaalexport (onder de vorm van directe investeringen en bankleningen). Op die manier krijgen we een typische verhouding van afhankelijkheid tussen het Europese centrum en de periferie: door ongelijke handelsverhoudingen stroomt geld van de periferie naar het centrum, waarna het centrum het opgepotte kapitaal kan inzetten om zijn greep op de economieën van de periferie te versterken.[iv] Het moet daarbij opgemerkt worden dat de Duitse positie geen model kan zijn voor andere landen, aangezien ze per definitie niet veralgemeenbaar is. De lonen drukken om de export te verhogen is iets wat onvermijdelijk winnaars en verliezers oplevert.

De landen uit de Europese periferie worden op die manier voor een stuk importmarkten voor goederen uit de kernlanden, zonder dat de EU hen een reëel perspectief biedt om hun achterstand op te halen. De zogenaamde structuurfondsen zijn een doekje voor het bloeden als er geen politiek wordt gevoerd om de onderliggende, structureel ongelijke verhoudingen weg te werken. Het gevolg is dat de landen uit de periferie grote tekorten kregen op hun handelsbalans, en ze hun groei voor een stuk realiseerden via toenemende (private en/of publieke) schulden (Griekenland en Portugal) of immobiliënspeculatie (Spanje en Ierland).

De Europese Centrale Bank (ECB) intervenieerde bijvoorbeeld massaal om de banken te redden in 2007-2009. Zij konden met hulp van het geld van de ECB hun balansen schoonmaken, terwijl ze tegelijk zelf minder leningen gaven aan bedrijven, en hierdoor de economische crisis verder versterkten. Tijdens de Griekse crisis blijft de ECB echter afzijdig. Dat is geen toeval: de Europese verdragen verbieden de ECB om publieke schuld op te kopen. Het is het neoliberalisme ten top. De ECB redt de private banken, en staat toe te kijken hoe de banken en speculanten vervolgens de publieke financiën ondermijnen.

De toestand is niet minder dan wraakroepend: overheden waren overal tussengekomen om de crisis van het financiële systeem te lijf te gaan, en moesten daarvoor zelf schulden maken, precies op het slechtste moment om nieuwe leningen aan te gaan. Banken waren erg terughoudend om geld te lenen, intrestvoeten gingen de lucht in, met de bekende gevolgen voor de overheidsbegrotingen. De banken waren door de overheden gered, en kunnen vervolgens die overheden zelf droog leggen of nog eens extra uitmelken. Ze kunnen bij de Europese Centrale Bank lenen aan 1 % om vervolgens leningen te verschaffen aan staten aan veel hogere rentevoeten.

De som die Griekenland nu ontving, is voldoende om het land twee jaar onafhankelijk te maken van de financiële markten. Maar daarmee is fundamenteel niets opgelost.

Het hulpplan is dan ook vooral een poging om tijd te kopen en te verhinderen dat andere landen meegesleurd worden in de maalstroom. Vooral Portugal en Spanje zijn kwetsbaar, omdat veel van hun schulden ook in buitenlandse handen zijn.

We hebben nu dus, zoals ik het begrijp, twee opties: of we doen mee aan een massale herverdeling van geld (eenrichtingverkeer naar boven), of we kappen ermee.

Van mij mogen we de Euro opheffen. Het is mooi geweest.

Cohen groeit steeds meer in mijn ogen

DIT is de PvdA zoals ik het vroeger heb gekend.
Ben heel blij als het weer terugkomt... als dit maar geen gelegenheidspolitiek is!

De inkomensverschillen in Nederland zijn te groot geworden, vooral tussen de middenklasse en alles wat daarboven zit.

''Het gaat erom dat tekortkomingen in de maatschappelijke solidariteit worden opgelost. Scheefgroei zit zoals altijd vooral tussen inkomensgroepen, tussen generaties, tussen bevolkingsgroepen, tussen gezonden en zieken, tussen mannen en vrouwen.''

''Bij de inkomensgroepen is het verschil tussen de middenklasse en de lagere groepen nog te overzien, maar zit de onbalans tussen de middenklasse en alles wat daarboven zit.

Dus is er behoefte aan fiscale correctie en is het onjuist uit dogmatische bijziendheid te roepen dat lastenverzwaring per definitie niet zou mogen, ongeacht de inkomenspositie van mensen.''

Winstuitkeringen in de publieke sector staan haaks op de PvdA-idealen. ''In de publieke sector past een publieke moraal en geen commercieel motief.''

De politiek moet ook veranderen, want met de burger als consument is de politiek ''verworden tot een service provider, die bovendien meestal niet levert wat wordt beloofd''.

Ik ben het helemaal eens met Cohen

Ik heb dit vaker gezegd:

Bevrijdingsdag moet voortaan elk jaar officieel een feestdag zijn. Nu is dat slechts eens in de vijf jaar het geval.

Daarvoor pleit PvdA-lijsttrekker Job Cohen tegenover NU.nl. Hij wil hiermee aangeven hoe belangrijk vrijheid en vrijheid van meningsuiting zijn.

"Het wonderlijke is dat, naar mate je in een vrijere wereld leeft, het besef afneemt hoe belangrijk dat eigenlijk is", aldus de PvdA'er.

Het is belangrijk om WW2 niet te vergeten. Om ieder jaar stil te staan bij wat er gebeurd is, wat bijna gebeurd is en.... meest belangrijk, hoe en waarom. Vooral met de gebeurtenissen van de afgelopen tijd (Griekenland, de zuidelijke landen die zo veel achterlopen op de noordelijke landen, de tweespalk dat aan't ontwikkelen is, de economische situatie en vooruitzichten, enz.). Er is toen gezegd: nooit weer. Binnen één generatie dreigen we dit te vergeten.

Het graaicultuur is nog levend en wel

...en zonder wetgeving zal het ook zo blijven.

Toezichthouders bij grote Nederlandse bedrijven zijn de afgelopen jaren flink meer gaan verdienen. Afgelopen jaar steeg de beloning voor de raad van commissarissen van een AEX-fonds met gemiddeld 5 procent.

Over een periode van zeven jaar is de beloning bijna verdubbeld.

Dit meldde Het Financieele Dagblad maandag op basis van eigen onderzoek. De grote Nederlandse beursfondsen keren nu gemiddeld een half miljoen euro uit per raad van commissarissen. In 2003 ging het om 262.400 euro.

Brussel wil voortaan veel eerder betrokken worden bij het opstellen van begroting van Nederland en andere EU-landen.

De Europese Commissie overweegt Nederland door het Europees Hof van Justitie te laten veroordelen, aldus een woordvoerder van EU-commissaris Janez Potocnik (Milieu) vrijdag.
Het opmerkelijke geschil gaat over de bescherming van de blauwvintonijn. Voor de zogeheten CITES-conferentie in maart in Doha hadden de 27 EU-landen afgesproken zich te onthouden van stemming over een voorstel van Monaco. Het plan was om later met een eigen vooorstel te komen.

Tegen de afspraak in, stemden Nederland en Groot-Brittannië toch voor het voorstel van Monaco.

Unbelievable, that all the newspapers will copy-paste from each other, turning a blatant untruth into fact.
He was found guilty of  “failure to comply with a lawful order”, near as I could figure out in the muddled reporting of his trial and aftermath.

Peter Who?
A talented SciFi writer who had the misfortune of crossing the US/Canada border and ran head-first into furious aggression fuelled by paranoia. The laws in the USA are such that not instantly obeying, or asking what the problem is, could end you up with felony charges. As happened with him.

He is to be sentenced today. He might end up spending time in jail for getting beaten up by the US border guards.

And to think, I will be visiting the USA soon, and will be crossing into Canada at the same border crossing. It's almost enough to make me want to cancel the trip.






Update: No prison time for Peter Watts. After a rambling sermon from the judge, Watts and quite a bundle of his money parted company and he left for Canada. A convicted felon, which tag will remain on his back for life. Try travelling over the world with that! Any future science fiction awards will probably arrive in his hands via the mail. This, from the land of the free. Shameful.

Levende malariamuggen in een zuil in Amsterdam als reclamestunt...

Wat een ongelofelijk onverantwoordelijke stunt! Dat een arts hier achter staat maakt het nog erger. Dit zijn niet-Nederlandse malariamuggen, vermoedelijk niet besmet maar ze komen uit een malaria onderzoeksinstelling dus je weet het nooit echt. Ik vraag me af of zoiets wettelijk wel mag. Is malaria al jaren in Nederland uitgeroeid (sinds 1970 zijn wij volgens WHO officieel malaria-vrij), zal een ondoordachte reclamestunt het weer terugbrengen!

Je krijgt mij dus pertinent niet mee in deze actie. Ik hoop dat dit een enorme mislukking is want voor je het weet krijgen we over een paar maanden een zuil met een paar miljoen tsetsevliegen...

I think it's high time we all stopped being so careful and respectful of religion and religious entities such as this church. It's caused more misery in this world than people realise (just read the list to get an inkling!), and gets away with murder every time... all sins swept under a blanket of pious silence.

The catholic church and this pope deserves ridicule, and more.
And you know what? If this pope would do even one of the things on this list, it would have been an admirable thing and would have resulted in so much healing. It's a measure of the moral poverty of this religious institution, that all of these points are seen as an insult.

I wish the ministers had not apologised. It's not a list worthy of apology but of praise.

Let this be the final word on the CRU stolen email drama

A distinguished panel of independent scientists has given a resounding vote of confidence in the credibility and integrity of the key studies into climate change that have emerged over the past 20 years from the embattled Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia.

The panel, chaired by Lord Oxburgh, a geologist and former rector of Imperial College London, was asked to review the scientific papers and methodology of the CRU following the theft of university emails, the leaking of which suggested a possible conspiracy to subvert data in order to support the case for man-made climate change.

Lord Oxburgh's investigation found no evidence to suggest that the CRU scientists had acted improperly or dishonestly. It found the unit's overall conclusions were sound but it criticised the CRU for not using the best statistical tools to analyse the data - although this misjudgement did not alter the overall results and conclusions.

"We saw no evidence of any deliberate scientific malpractice in any of the work of the CRU and had it been there we believe that it is likely that we could have detected it. Rather we found a small group of dedicated if slightly disorganised researchers who were ill-prepared for being the focus of public attention."

I wish this fate on nobody, but it's oddly appropriate.
Beaten to death in his sleep by two of his farm workers.

And so ends this chapter of South African history. I hope his influence ends here and does not lead to more bloodshed. These are fragile times in South Africa, it won't take much for blood to start flowing.

...These words are used so often lately, almost carelessly. I find it especially grating in these times we now find ourselves.

In Europe we are going back to openly demonising specific groups of people. Nationalism is on the rise. Xenophobia is on the rise. The Euro power brokers have been deconstructing the original intentions of the Eurozone and are trying to turn it into a federal state... which is not working. Lately, there's a strong wealth division between Northern states and Southern states. The divide grows by the day. Angry retoric plus grinding poverty which is only going to get worse. In the USA the same terms abound in discussions between Republicans and Democrats. I was witness to a particularly vicious online argument over the past days, that set me to thinking and started off this post.

I also spoke to some young people last week. Oh, we won't ever have another war, they said. That's silly. Earlier in the discussion the words fascist and nazi dribbled through the conversation - talking about current world affairs. Some shared my political leanings, some not. All used this terminology almost without thinking.

This is dishonest, this use of these words. These terms belong to the ultimate horror and not to politicians of the day - even if these politicians are divisive or stupid or dishonest.

It's perhaps good to remember exactly what those words mean, what they can lead to.


This is an old WW2 US War dept documentary film on the death camps at the end of the war and is not safe watching for children. In fact, not really safe watching for adults either. It's pure nightmare material, the tone is accusatory and bitter. This is the awful history of our world, not so long ago. The real thing, so to speak.

We should reserve those words for their true use and not dilute their horror for populist arguments.

...en deze drie (wel OK, Wouter mag ik helemaal niet) hoefde nu juist NIET weg van mij. De rotte appels blijven hangen, ze hebben nu alleen nog meer speelruimte.
Het is te veel om te hopen dat rechts ook hun voorbeeld zal volgen, denk ik.

Ik ben blij dat Wouter Bos opstapt. Hij heeft mij diep teleurgesteld: als linkse politicus was hij behoorlijk rechts en veels te meegaand. Ik heb hoge verwachtingen van Joop Cohen voor PvdA.

Vertrouwen in politici

Dat was er toch al niet blind (zou niet verstandig zijn, he) maar nu..? Marcel van Dam heeft helemaal gelijk:

De democratie in ons land verkeert in crisis, omdat de meerderheid van de bevolking geen vertrouwen meer heeft in de meerderheid van de politieke partijen en de meerderheid van de politici.

Ze hebben het de afgelopen jaren vooral ook naar gemaakt. Het debacle rond het verdrag van Lissabon (aka Europese grondwet) was voor mij het plons water dat mijn emmer deed overlopen. Ik weet ook niet hoe je dat water ooit weer terug het emmer in krijgt. Een ding is zeker, het is een stuk gemakkelijker om water uit een emmer te laten sloppen dan het weer erin te scheppen.

De groei van de Duitse economie is stilgevallen. Het lichte herstel van Europa's grootste economie in het derde en tweede kwartaal heeft zich niet doorgezet in het laatste kwartaal van vorig jaar.

Other Euro countries' economies are also level or contracting. Greece is hovering on an abyss but so is Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Italy (that rather unlovely acronym PIIGS). The UK is in a mess. Good riddance!!!

I say this even though we'll probably have a right coalition after these elections. Left could have formed a solid coalition after the last elections but thanks to Bos, it did not happen. I have not forgotten that, nor have I forgotten the PVDA's politics over these past few years. I think they lost a great part of their electorate and justly so. With Jan out of the picture, no I seriously don't see a left coalition this time.

Well then, if it has to be a right coalition, so be it. I'll hate it and hopefully it will fall soon. But at least we are rid of Balkenende... (nightmare thought: Balkenende V - EEK!!!)

I hope Wilders will be an improvement over Rouvoet (he'll be just as terrible, I expect, but in another direction). These past years have been a morality crusade against coffeeshops, prostitution, abortion, and even evolution teaching at schools, with preachy advice over morals and values from my government who exibited none itself. I'm happy to be rid of that.

Considering the economic situation, this is the worst possible thing that could happen to my country. I hope there won't be any major financial meltdowns during the three months it will take to get a new government. Meanwhile, the demissionary government will take care of business.

Historische krimp economie in 2009
De Nederlandse economie is vorig jaar met 4 procent gekrompen. Een dergelijke krimp is niet eerder voorgekomen, maakte het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) vrijdag bekend.

Aantal faillissementen op recordpeil
Vorig jaar is een recordaantal faillissementen uitgesproken. In totaal was er sprake van 10,5 duizend faillissementen, zo blijkt uit cijfers van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS).
Het aantal faillissementen is met 54 procent gestegen ten opzichte van 2008. Vooral de industrie kreeg zware klappen te verduren, daar werd een toename met 121 procent gemeten.

Export is enige motor van economische groei
Het herstel van de Nederlandse economie is volledig afhankelijk van de export. De consument en het bedrijfsleven laten het voorlopig afweten.
Dat zei hoofdeconoom Michiel Vergeer van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) vrijdag bij de presentatie van de economische cijfers over het afgelopen jaar.
"Zonder de export zouden we nog steeds krimpen", aldus Vergeer. "Consumenten stellen grote bestedingen nog altijd uit en de investeringen van bedrijven ontwikkelen zich buitengewoon beroerd."

Intussen zijn de vooruitzichten voor Griekenland grimmig en er lijkt geen oplossing voorhanden. Spanje, Portugal, Ierland, Frankrijk, Verenigde Koninkrijk zijn allen ook zeer kwetsbaar. Reken Oostenrijk en Nederland ook maar tot het status zeer kwetsbaar... ik voorzie echt niet veel goeds voor 2010!

Op volledig ondemocratische wijze, in achterkamertjes, worden onze rechten en privacy volledig verkwanseld.

Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). Dit verdrag moet piraterij op intellectueel eigendom stoppen en wordt in het diepste geheim uitonderhandeld. Uit uitgelekte concepten wordt duidelijk dat het controleren van computers of mp3-spelers aan de grens, controle door providers van internetverkeer, het uitsluiten van internet en allerhande strafrechtelijke maatregelen tot de mogelijkheden gaan behoren.

Volgens In 't Veld is er een groeiende irritatie bij het Europees Parlement over de geheimhouding, terwijl transparantie formeel de norm is. “Het lijkt wel dat iedere keer als een land geheimhouding vraagt dat meteen ook gebeurt”, verzucht ze. Volgens haar inschatting is het Europarlement dat ook zat en momenteel “rabiaat tegen” de gang van zaken. Of dat het verdrag tegen gaat houden is onzeker.

Zelf probeert ze helder te krijgen wat nou precies bekokstoofd wordt in de vergaderkamers. Ze diende een Europees Wob-verzoek in, maar kreeg niets. “Daar zal ik binnenkort een rechtszaak voor starten.”

Ook het Ministerie van Economische Zaken claimt tegen de geheimzinnigheid te zijn. “Nederland heeft meerdere malen kenbaar gemaakt het proces niet transparant te vinden en die zorgen meerdere malen overgebracht in dit traject”, stelt de voorlichter. Maar ook Heemskerk weigerde documenten op verzoek van uw verslaggever te openbaren en voerde zeer vage redenen op waarom geen openheid hoefde te worden gegeven. Zelfs na een bezwaarprocedure kwam er geen openheid.

Nu blijkt in het klimaatrapport (uit 2007) te staan dat 55 procent van Nederland onder de zeespiegel ligt, terwijl het slechts 26 procent is.

Verantwoordelijk voor die fout is Maarten Hajer, directeur van het Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving, een wetenschappelijk bureau dat valt onder Cramers ministerie. Maar, zegt Hajer: ‘Wij zijn onafhankelijk. Deze tekst hebben wij rechtstreeks naar de leading author van het IPCC gestuurd, niet via het ministerie.’

Volgens hem is er geen sprake van opzet. ‘Dit is een eenvoudige beschrijvende passage, geen belangrijk wetenschappelijk werk.’ Er had moeten staan dat Nederland voor 26 procent onder de zeespiegel ligt en dat nog eens 29 procent wordt bedreigd door overstromingen door rivieren. Samen 55 procent. Mogelijk is de fout gemaakt doordat de tekst moest worden ingekort. ‘Een redactionele fout dus, maar het heeft niets te maken met slinkse motieven’ die sommigen hem toedichten.

De Telegraaf is weer 'goed' bezig

Met een headline: Hoezo opwarming? in koeienletters op de voorpagina.

Met een koor van de gebruikelijke paranoide reageerders die elkaar opzwepen. Ik schrik soms van de niveau.... wat leren mensen nog op school, vraag ik me af.

Ik word hier zo moe van. In Nederland eindigt een gesprek over klimaatverandering bijna altijd zo.

Met de media die zich zo onverantwoordelijk gedraagt is het geen wonder dat zoveel Nederlanders hun kop enthousiast in't zand stoppen...

(ik zou graag willen zien dat dit soort journalistiek zich publiekelijk verantwoordt - laat Wilders maar lekker kwaken en pak liever dit soort propaganda aan)
